A Mum's Guide to Securing the perfect Spot for September 2024!

Ok so i’m hoping it isn’t just me who was absolutely clueless on how to find a primary school for my first daughter and when I have to do this by?!! Ive been doing a lot or research after someone told me that i’m literally a month away from embarking on the journey of securing a primary school spot for September 2024. The pressure to get this right is real, we are potentially holding our child's golden ticket to a world of learning and new friendships. So, grab your pens (Or pencil if like me you can’t commit to pen when writing into a notepad, not sure what this says about me and commitment lol but thats just my thing) and get ready to decode the enrollement magic, because I've got tips n tricks to help you ace the primary school application process!

Also be sure to check if schools out of your catchment area are an option, i’ve been told by numerous schools that my eldest’s birth year has a really low birth rate so there are more school places than students and a top choice outside a catchment area is looking pretty positive!

Step 1: The Light-Hearted Kickoff Before we dive into the nitty-gritty details, take a moment to celebrate this milestone. Your little one is ready to take on the world of primary school, and you're the magical guide leading the way. Cue the confetti and give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back!

Step 2: Know Your Options Research, research, research! Familiarise yourself with the primary schools in your area. Attend open days, chat with other parents, join local Facebook groups and soak up all the information you can about each school's ethos, curriculum, and overall vibe.

Step 3: Mark Those Dates on the Calendar The application process is like a festive calendar countdown. Circle the key dates: the opening and closing dates for applications, any school open days, and information sessions. Missing these dates is like forgetting the cookies for Santa—it just won't do!

Step 4: Be Strategic with Choices When it comes to choosing schools, be strategic. Consider the distance, school reputation, and any unique features that align with your child's needs. List your choices in order of preference, with your dream school taking the top spot. You may find your childs birth year has a lower rate and so your more likely to get your top choice even if its out of catchment.

Step 5: Online Applications Unleashed Most primary school applications are done online. Ensure your internet connection is as reliable as grandma's apple pie recipe. Double-check that you have all the necessary documents and information ready to roll.

Step 6: Personal Statements: Your Secret Sauce If your chosen school requires a personal statement, think of it as your secret sauce. Pour in your child's strengths, interests, and what makes them uniquely awesome. This is your chance to shine a spotlight on your little superstar.

Step 7: Timing is Everything Submit your application well before the deadline. Procrastination may be tempting, but don't let it play Grinch with your plans. Submitting early ensures that your application gets the attention it deserves.

Step 8: The Waiting Game Once the application is in, prepare for the waiting game. Use this time to focus on creating positive vibes for your child about the upcoming adventure. Maybe a countdown calendar or a special bedtime story about the wonders of primary school?

Find out who your local council is here who can then advise you on when the application process opens within your area.

And there you have it, hoping this takes away a little of your potential anxiety about this. I have every faith we can all breeze through the primary school application process now…We got this!
